Mid90s
2018, Directed by Jonah Hill
I’m not very well versed in mid 90s skate culture so I won’t be touching on culture specifics much. Per usual I’ll be talking about visuals in the film as well as emotional impact.
With "Mid90s," Jonah Hill makes his debut into directing, a transition that unveils his creative versatility beyond acting. The film immerses viewers into the gritty skate culture of mid 1990s Los Angeles, a milieu where visual authenticity and emotional resonance intertwine.
Centered on 13-year-old Stevie, nicknamed Sunburn, the narrative unfolds as he finds camaraderie and identity among a group of skateboarders he encounters in downtown LA. Against a backdrop of domestic turmoil—loneliness, abuse, and neglect—Stevie discovers solace and belonging within this unconventional chosen family.
Hill's directorial vision is distinctly nostalgic, captured vividly through the lens of Kodak Super 16mm film in a vintage 4:3 aspect ratio. The deliberate saturation and period-accurate synthesizer-infused soundtrack transport the audience to a simpler time, evoking palpable 90s vibrations reminiscent of sitting before an old school tv.
As a 90s baby, I remember running around like the character “fourth grade” with a camera , filming my brother on tape as we lived life.

While the soundtrack's occasional tonal dissonance during crucial scenes is a minor misstep, the overall commitment to period detail and emotional authenticity shines through. Hill adeptly navigates the juxtaposition of youthful joy against darker themes of familial strife, crafting a narrative that resonates beyond its temporal setting.
The film's emotional depth is particularly poignant in its portrayal of familial dynamics, notably Stevie's older brother, whose sporadic but impactful presence resonates profoundly. Despite minimal dialogue, his character's complexities—a product of parental absence and personal anguish—are hauntingly rendered, culminating in poignant moments that tug at the heartstrings.
A chat between brothers
The emotional depth that resonates through the familial scenes is seamlessly translated into the interactions between Sunburn and his friends throughout the film. Each character carries their own burden, which paradoxically fuels a carefree and rebellious attitude when they unite with their chosen skateboarding family. Yet, this camaraderie is not without its fractures. The inner turmoil within the group occasionally surfaces, leading to rifts, particularly between Sunburn and the friend who initially welcomed him into their circle. Despite their shared struggles with pain and loneliness, their conflicts often reflect a cycle of hurt individuals inadvertently inflicting wounds upon one another. This portrayal is heartbreakingly real, illustrating the complexities of adolescence where damaged souls seek solace in each other but can also inadvertently exacerbate their own wounds.
In conclusion, "Mid90s" is an emotional exploration of adolescence, camaraderie, and personal growth set against a vividly recreated backdrop of mid 90s skate culture. While it may not entirely escape some pitfalls, Hill's directorial debut stands as a promising venture into the complexities of youth and identity.
There’s some content I do not care for in this film but I’m not going down that moral spiral 🌀
